(glimpses) - graceful mechanics

during the very last bit of our holiday recess, we managed to squeeze our one and only day trip …a drive into Cambridge, MA with our destination this time being the MIT Museum .



among slowly moving mechanics that beat quiet rhythms,  the baby doll gently rocking endlessly to the transparent mechanics that

and the mechanical man who attempted  emotional expressions through the varied lessons of passing strangers,

and the faucet that dripped perpetually metal beads of water


the autumn leaf's graceful balanced walk on the turning wheel.  all knew not if it called themselves machine or art, but maybe names don't matter …the exhibit titled "5000 Moving Parts" is up through November 2014, so there's time to see these gracefully mechanical thoughts if you have the chance….

(glimpses) - the young knight's journey

it's still hard to believe she's finished up her 6th grade year and heading into another school year... here we go for a last summer assignment (medieval studies) visiting the Higgins Armory Museum...

in a world to itself, we see knights in armor frozen in time....medieval thoughts housed in glass cases....

the most silent of jousting tournaments and ceremonial guard standing at attention as we go by

and if it's possible to say, novel ideas of what a sword might look like that never saw battle or did harm

and the very unusual find of a Wedgewood encrusted sword made ... who could imagine the pairing of fine china ceramics and honed metal in this way ...

meanwhile st george (and dragon) are shown in a carved in armored wood

and if the museum's collection of armor and arms, fencing demonstrations, and the occasional roman clad soldier walking around and greeting visitors were not enough, the interactive 2nd floor is great to visit with its chain mail and armor available to try on, medieval village games sets to play, moveable life-size chess games and large foam block arch and blocks for fortress building

otherwise this week has seen me busy in the workshop with a much less epic task of finishing a new little herd pigs !

ps. I found out that the Higgins Armory Museum itself will be closing in December 2013 until it otherwise incorporated into the Worchester Museum of Art.  The collection there is the third largest of it's kind in the world. The current space is really special and definitely worth a visit if you are near by in the northeast!

(glimpses) - walking through time

a favorite place where we walk past people we will never know

except for their gilded moment in our own time .....

a simple haystack immortalized in a way no other has been ....




































and sit where fallen trees have found beautiful purposefulness ....

past the man in the stove-pipe hat, the golden tin-plated rooster, carriages and wind vanes, colorful ponies and yes, flying pigs...

and growing thing do not grow....

but still tower like modern beanstalks overhead ...
